Fly Away

The tree had survived the passing years, seasons and storms while most everything else had withered away.  He trusted its branches would hold his shifting weight as he would race toward the clouds.  He hoped the roots were strong and deep enough to support the ground beneath him, for he feared the earth would open and he would disappear.  The tree was his shelter, his friend, his safe haven.  The rings beneath its thick bark held the secrets, it witnessed all that others ignored, it was watered with his tears and it willingly accepted his prayers.  Closing his eyes, he heard the whisper of the wind through the leaves, “fly away.”
