It didn’t matter that she belonged to another man for she had given everything that mattered to him.  There was no need missing her because even though he never knew when she would show up, what mattered was that she did.  As the smoke from his hand rolled cigarette mixed with the salty air of September he guessed she was near.  She would hide her bicycle behind a sand dune, take off her sensible shoes and silk stockings and make her way down the beach to him.
